The Greek state on Monday officially submitted a request to the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) to pay off a portion of the loans extended to Athens by the IMF, according to a dispatch by Reuters, which quoted a finance ministry official.
The request towards the ESM is for the early repayment of up to 3.7 billion euros in IMF loans before the maturity date. The chunk of IMF loans that Greece wants to pay off are burdened with a higher interest rate than the bailout loans extended by European institutional creditors.
ESM Managing Director Klaus Regling has already signalled his support for the early repayment.
