The Greek foreign ministry on Sunday evening called on law enforcement authorities in neighboring Albania to fully investigate and clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 35-year-old Greek citizen in the southern Albanian town of Bularat, or Vouliaretes.

Konstantinos Katsifas was fatally shot in a gun battle with Albanian police reportedly sent to arrest him, according to Albanian authorities.

In a statement, the foreign ministry in Athens referred to an "unacceptable event" whereby a police operation leads to a loss of life.

A bevy of media reports in both countries claimed that the victim had hoisted a Greek flag in the village and refused to take it down, whereby a shooting erupted between him and police.
