Olympiacos FC president Vangelis Marinakis on Wednesday announced that he will step down from the club's helm, hours after an appellate judicial council handed down a single count of "altering the result of a football match" against him.

Conversely, another three charges were thrown out.

The Greek champions' current vice-president, Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis, will assume the club's top post.

Marinakis, a well-known Piraeus-based shipowner that recently made a major foray into Greece's media sector, was among 28 past and present pro football officials in the country facing charges before a three-justice appellate court.

Marinakis promised to again assume the post after he is acquitted, as he said.
