A portion of imported used vehicles in Greece will be slapped with higher road fees for 2017, with the finance ministry saying the hikes are the result of a harmonization of the country’s legal framework with a Commission directive (46-4410/2016).
Whatever taxes, fees and objective tax criteria will now be imposed based on the first year in which the vehicle was registered in a European Union or EEA country, and not the year in which it was imported to Greece. The revision affects 133,000 vehicles out of the 5.5 million in the country, of which nearly 42,000 will be taxed with lower road fees; roughly 60,000 vehicles are unaffected and some 31,800 will be slapped with higher fees.
