Facilities were torched early Monday at the Moria “hot spot” on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, while violence and vandalism was reported at the scene as well.
Lesvos has served as the primary “target” over the past year and a half for Mideast war refugees and irregular economic migrants attempting to land on EU territory – i.e. Greece’s eastern Aegean islands -- from neighboring Turkey.
Would-be economic migrants are mostly young males, arriving from as far away as Morocco and Bangladesh and aiming to reach preferred destinations in western and northern Europe.
According to reports, most of the protestors are Pakistani nationals angry over delays in asylum processing at the site.
Asylum service employees abandoned the camp, while the local fire brigade and riot police were dispatched to the scene.
