Dozens of third country nationals being hosted at a “hotspot” on the eastern Aegean island of Hios (Chios) blocked off the facility on Thursday in protest over what they claim are delays an asylum processing.
Most of the third country nationals claim refugee status as citizens of countries in conflict, mostly Syria. All of the third country nationals arrived on Hios after clandestinely landing from the opposite Turkish coast.
Nevertheless, a large portion of the people still housed at the “Vial” site are would-be economic migrants from countries as far apart as Morocco and Bangladesh, who want to reach preferred destinations in western and northern Europe.
