Tension erupted on Thursday afternoon outside a one-time military camp now used as a migrant shelter, as some 500 asylum-seekers and other third country nationals, including families, set up tents on the roadway and began protesting.
Groups of protestors, mostly young males, also threw stones and other objects at assembled riot police, who responded with tear gas.
The group of protesting third country nationals at the Diavata camp demanded they be allowed to reach the Greek border and attempt to pass into neighboring North Macedonia, with the preferred destination being Germany.
