A top government minister on Wednesday, during debate at a relevant Parliament committee, expressed qualified support towards legislating a law to benefit responsible borrowers, especially those paying off mortgages in a timely manner amid eight years of a punishing Greek economic crisis.
Deputy PM and Economy Minister Yannis Dragasakis spoke during the opening of debate on the previous day's urgently tabled draft amendment to re-establish a legal framework for protection of primary residences in the country from creditors.
"We do not reject such a solution, nor are we opposed to this issue," he said, in reply to a question by main opposition New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyannis.
Bakoyannis' brother, ND President Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has proposed debt relief for responsible borrowers.
While saying his hard left party has proposed such a relief measure back in 2016 - a year into its tenure - Dragasakis cautioned, however, that "I don't know if we'll get it into this bill. I would encourage ND's deputies to prepare an amendment, and we'll be here to see it."
