The number of Greek-controlled shipping companies again dropped, slightly, in 2018, continuing a negative trend for a seventh straight year, with the number standing at 588 last year, down from 597 in 2017.

While the number of vessels and the transport capacity controlled by Greek interests continues to grow, shipping firms are less, a trend pointing to a greater concentration.

According to a Petrofin Research study, Greek-controlled shipping firms were 638 in 2016 and 648 in 2015.

On a positive note, Petrofin said the number of Greek shipping company with a fleet corresponding to more than one million dwt in 2018 reached 77, two more than in 2017, and up from 68 in 2016.

Those 77 companies, in fact, account for a staggering 80 of the Greek-owned fleet, up from 79.58 percent in 2017.
