A decision to allow the installation of a cremator within the boundaries of the municipality of Athens was signed by the relevant environment minister on Tuesday, another legal move edging towards the construction and operation of the first-ever unit for cremations in Greece.

Opposition, mostly on religious grounds, has prevented the operation of a crematorium in Greece, with relatives and loves ones usually transporting cadavers to neighboring Bulgaria, over the past two decades, for cremation in order to fulfill the funeral request of the deceased.

The cremator will supposedly be housed in a structure in the industrial and warehouse district of Eleonas, southwest of downtown Athens.

The decision was signed by Minister Giorgos Stathakis, in the presence of outgoing Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis.
