Australia and Luxembourg offer the highest minimum hourly wages, worldwide, according to the German think tank Wirtschafts-und Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut (WSI), with Greece, however, dropping behind the central European averages, as the lowest legal remuneration for wage-earners is closer to Balkan levels.
According to the study, which compared wages based on purchasing power, the hourly minimum wage in Australia is 9.47 euros, six times higher than the average in Russia, which falls to a paltry 1.64 euros.
Luxembourge, the WSI notes, is slightly behind at 9.37 euros per hour, and 9.18 euros for France.
The lowest rate in Greece is 3.94 euros per hour, slightly above neighboring Bulgaria, at 3.28 euros, and just above the Baltic states: Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, 3.92, 3.87 and 3.60 euros, respectively.
