A relevant energy minister on Monday announced that the government was abolishing two separate levies imposed on lignite production and power generation, with Minister Giorgos Stathakis pointing to what he called "significant benefits" for electricity suppliers as well as the Public Power Corp. (PPC), the state-run and dominant power utility in Greece.
Stathakis put the benefit for cash-strapped PPC at between 200 to 250 million euros.
He also said abolition of the "lignite surcharge", which was imposed in 2012, and corresponds to two euros per MWh of lignite-produced electricity, will leave 25 to 30 million euros in producers' pockets per year.
