Much of southern Greece continued to experience weather-related problems on Sunday, as a severe cyclone-like stormed caused torrential rainfall and heavy seas.

Hundreds of calls to the fire brigade were reported, main to due to flooding, while provincial roadways were blocked, mainly in the southern Peloponnese. Ferry boat and train services were also interrupted.

Three people, including an elderly man, were reported as missing from the town of Mantoudi in northeast Evia island, which straddles the eastern Greek coast's mainland.

Numerous problems, mainly flooded roads and buildings, were reported in the greater Athens area.

Regional authorities in both south-central Greece and the Peloponnese have requested that the areas be declared in a state of emergency.

Meanwhile, total of 14 vessels were reported as sunk in extreme southern Greece.

The storm, named "Xenophon" but dubbed "Zorbas" by the media, emerged in the central Mediterranean in the middle of last week.
