Greece's culture ministry on Monday abruptly "changed gears" and ordered the opening of the Acropolis archaeological site, with free access, from 5 to 8 p.m. the same day.
The site was closed earlier over fears that a heatwave would plague the Athens area, a weather forecast that didn't materialize.
The decision to close the site had generated sharp criticism.
