Greek-controlled shipping increased its share of the global fleet, according to recent data by IHS Markit, which was processed this week by the London-based Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee, better known as the “Committee”.
The Greek-controlled fleet remains the largest world-wide as of March 2018, with 16.4 percent of the global total in terms of dwt; 13.8 percent in terms of gt and 7.6 percent in terms of vessels.
A year earlier, in March 2017, the figures were 16.2 percent; 13.7 percent and again 7.6 percent, respectively.
The development shows that Greek shipping companies and owners acquired larger vessels.
In terms of tankers, Greek interests control 26.4 percent of the global fleet; 16.2 percent of the bulkers.
In total, 4,148 vessels above 1,000 gt, of all types of categories, comprise the Greek-controlled fleet as of March 19, 2018, and with a total transport capacity of 341.92 million dwt και 199.28 million gt.
Conversely, the Greek registry as of March 2018 was had 24 less vessels from a year ago, with the total now at 723 ships, and 74.537 million dwt.
