Two German journalists were arrested on Friday in a restricted military zone in the northeast border prefecture of Evros, at a location near the village of Praggi, near the town of Didymoticho, a local news site, evros-news, quoted Greek police as saying.
The news site said the pair was located by a patrol and taken to a local police precinct, where they claimed to be reporters working for the German television broadcaster ARD. Their aim, again according to media reports, was to follow a "reverse" route by illegal migrants departing Germany and returning to their homelands - a path that includes a clandestine passage across the Evros (Maritsa) River that separates Greece and Turkey in the Thrace province.
Moreover, an incident involving the arrest of two Greek servicemen that allegedly strayed into Turkish territory in the exact same region, near the village of Kastanies this time, has caused for even greater border security vigilance along the frontier.
