Canadian multinational Eldorado Gold on Thursday announced that it was freezing activity at its Skouries building site in northern Greece, with the facilities entering a “maintenance” phase, as a relevant press release noted.

The development generated an immediate reaction by a group representing up to 600 workers at the site, who called for meetings with relevant ministers to demand that bureaucratic obstacles to the mining project, as they claim, be overcome.

According to Eldorado Gold CEO George Burns, despite progress at the other mining concession (Olympiada) held his company’s Greek subsidiary, Hellas Gold, the multinational miner demands the necessary licenses and state support before sinking any more money in Skouries.

He added that efforts are continuing to solve pending issues with a constant dialogue with the Greek government.
