Initial reports state that the fire was caused by welding works at the 15th century structure known as the Sultan Mehmed Mosque or Bayezid Mosque, which is undergoing restoration.

A fire erupted in the early morning hours of Wednesday at a historic Ottoman-era mosque in the extreme northeastern border city of Didymoteicho, with the blaze later put out by the fire brigade.
