Flamboyant and equally controversial former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis on Tuesday claimed that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had already decided by June 2014 to withdraw support from the then Samaras coalition government holding power in Athens.
He made his most recent provocative statement during a presentation on Tuesday in the Greek capital for his latest book, entitled "And the Weak Suffer What They Must?: Europe, Austerity and the Threat to Global Stability".
Varoufakis claimed that the third memorandum was already being planned in 2013 and 2014, while ex-PM Antonis Samaras and his government "were ended", as he claimed, was because the powerful German FinMin considered that the former had worn out his usefulness.
As Varoufakis recounted, he asked his one-time German counterpart: "Wolfgang, tell me when did you decide to topple Samaras?" He quickly gave the answer as being "June 2014".
