European Central Bank (ECB) executive board member Benoît Cœuré had soothing words for his Greek hosts on Monday, where he told an audience at an economic conference in Athens that "Europe's success in dealing with Greece is Europe's success in dealing with itself."

Cœuré, who accompanies European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici on a visit to Athens at the beginning of a very crucial week for the Greek program, praised the number of reforms implemented by the leftist Greek government, while stressing that others remain to be completed.

Tellingly, he said that the ECB's governing council will also gauge Athens' commitment in implementing memorandum-mandated reforms when it decides on whether or not to re-accept Greek state bonds as collateral in its quantitative easing liquidity scheme -- more than a year after the leftist government was bumped from the mechanism.

Coeure addressed the 27th annual Greek economy conference, entitled "Greece and the Global Disruptive Environment: A look into the future" organized by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce.
