Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday spoke by phone with US president-elect Donald Trump, with the former congratulating the Republican candidate for his election victory.
According to a press release issued by the prime minister’s office, Tsipras cited the close bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people.
He also cited Greece’s crucial role for peace and security in its wider region, particularly during the current period of increased destabilization, while also referring to efforts made by the Greek people amid the economic crisis and the ongoing refugee problem.
Finally, Tsipras and Trump reportedly confirmed the importance of boosting strategic cooperation by the two countries on several fronts, in the wake of the recent visit to Athens by outgoing US President Barack Obama.
