Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday evening called on Greek shipowners and companies to invest in the country, and to exploit what he called business opportunities in the country.

Tsipras spoke at an event in central Athens to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Union of Greek Shipowners.

In urging for greater investments in the recession-plagued country, the leftist Greek premier referred to the “internationally well-known business acumen of Greek ship owners, and their ability to make the right decision at the right time, against the prevailing current, in an anti-cyclical (economic) manner, as economists call it.”

In a departure from much of the rhetoric his more radically inclined party espoused while in the opposition prior to January 2015, Tsipras said the Greek state will continue to defend Greek shipping interests in international organizations.
