A plenary session of Greece’s Council of State (CoS), the country’s highest administrative court, on Thursday produced a majority vote in favor of hearing motions filed by several television stations requesting that a law shifting the broadcasting licensing domain from an independent authority to the government be declared unconstitutional.
The vote by the high court justices was 16 in favor of hearing the case, to nine opposed.
The majority also ignored a recommendation by CoS legal counselor Giorgos Papageorgiou favoring a dismissal of the case outright, as essentially being without merit.
According to reports attributed to leaks from within the session, proceedings over four hours were tense.
