Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party was given a lead of 12.5 percentage points over ruling SYRIZA party in a latest opinion poll published over the weekend.

ND was favored by 31 percent of respondents that participated in the poll, ahead of leftist SYRIZA’s 18.5 percent.

The opinion poll was published in the Athens daily “Eleftheros Typos” and conducted by the firm Opinion Poll.

The parties that follow in succession, and their apparent support, are also the same as in several previous opinion polls: the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) with 6.5 percent; a socialist PASOK-led grouping with 5 percent, but also a newcomer to the over 3-percent threshold, i.e. a party founded by the former parliament president Zoi Konstantopoulou.

No other party, including the smaller ones currently in Parliament, are given more than 3 percent of respondents’ support. Three percent of the general vote is necessary under Greek law to enter the 300-MP Parliament.

Asked who they believe will win the next election whenever it is held, 61.2 percent of respondents picked center-right ND, as opposed to 14 percent for SYRIZA.

All of the opinion polls released over the past month, after the height of the summer holiday period, show ND in front of SYRIZA by a comfortable lead, except one opinion poll published days ago in a very low-circulation broadsheet with an unabashed pro-government stance.
