The European Court on Wednesday imposed a hefty fine on Greece for failing to implement Community regulations on the processing of dangerous and toxic waste, seven years after the last conviction against the country for the same case.
The Court cited a recurrent danger to public health from the Greek state’s failure to implement the Union's regulations.
A daily fine reaches 30,000 euros with a one-off fine reaching 10 million euros for the debt-plagued country.
A similar ruling and call for action came in September 2009, with the Court noting that nary anything has been done in the sector since then, despite repeated warnings by Community officials in the meantime.
According to reports, some 600,000 tons of dangerous and toxic waste was temporarily stored in Greece in 2009.
