An ongoing probe by a Competition Committee in Greece, a semi-autonomous watchdog entity, into allegations of a public works cartel by domestic and foreign construction companies could lead to a freeze in EU funding for the country by the Union’s Cohesion Fund.

An EU source told “N” on Tuesday that a letter to Athens by a relevant Commission directorate will officially announce as much to Greek authorities.

The seriousness of the probe is expected to be cited in the letter, which is predicted to reach desktops in Athens next week. Community funded public works projects dating as far back as 1989 are under investigation.

The same source underlined that Athens has already been briefed by a Community official who was in the Greek capital last week.

Discussion on a recommendation by the Competition Commission is due to start on July 21, however, no date has been fixed on when a final decision will be issued.
