"I was shocked and saddened to learn about the death of Fofi Gennimata. I say goodbye to her with respect. But also flooded with thoughts caused by her so unjust and untimely loss. Because politics is, above all, humane," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement on Monday.

"Fofi was a fighter of life, fighting with dignity the difficulties of her health and the enemy that struck her family. And she stood up to the end, serving her duty. It thus became a symbol of courage for all women, but also for men suffering from serious illnesses.

"To the warm condolences of all Greek women and men to the children, her husband and her own people, I add my own," the prime minister's statement said.

Mitsotakis was informed about the death of KINAL leader Fofi Gennimata upon his arrival in Saudi Arabia for a two-day official visit, the prime minister's office said.

In the same announcement was underlined that "Kyriakos Mitsotakis has changed his schedule and will return to Athens on Tuesday night. His tour to the islands of the Dodecanese on Wednesday and Thursday is also cancelled."
