Media reports in Athens on Friday, just after noon local time, referred to a practically island-wide power blackout on the island of Crete, Greece's largest.

Later reports pointed to an explosion at a power station in the Irakleio area, possibly involving a transformer. No injuries were reported.

Crete, similar to most other Greek isles in the Aegean, is not connected to the mainland grid, instead, local power stations - most using conventional oil-fired generators - provide electricity.

Practically all of the island's power generation is provided by the state-owned Public Power Corp., the dominant electricity utility in Greece.
