Two arrests were made on Monday morning in relation to the latest instance of vandalism by members of a notorious local "anarchist collective", with the side entrance of the US embassy targeted by paint in the early morning "intervention".
A total of 10 people were initially detained, with two of the detainees later charged by a prosecutor and held in custody.
The "Rouvikonas" group later claimed responsibility for the vandalism.
In later post on his Twitter page, US ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt first expressed his best wishes for the recent holidays, and then wrote "...I'm happy to be back in Greece! During the current lapse in US govt appropriations, I’ll be less public in my daily work, but I do want to condemn this morning’s silly and senseless vandalism at the US Embassy and thank @hellenicpolice for their quick action."
Greece's foreign ministry also issued an announcement over the incident, yet another instance of vandalism by members of the same group against a foreign diplomatic mission in Athens.
