One of eight Turkish servicemen that fled to Greece and requested political asylum after a July 2016 coup attempt in the neighboring country on Thursday was granted his release from detention but under strict conditions.
A Council of State ruling freed the man, identified as Turkish army helicopter co-pilot Suleyman Ozkaywakci, but ordered that he not be issued travel documents, that he declare a residence whose location will remain confidential and that he appear, once a day, at a police precinct with jurisdiction over his residence.
The ruling does not suspend the process of petitioning for asylum, but allows the army aviator to remain free until a final decision over motion by the Tsipras government to overturn a previous decision by an asylum committee.
According to the CoS, Greece's highest administrative court, the Turkish national must be granted police protection and reside in secure conditions, but without the ability to depart Greece.
