A relevant prosecutor in Athens has filed felony charges against an 88-year-old man who fired a shotgun against two robbers that broke into his residence in the upscale coastal suburb of Glyfada this week, a development that generated sharp reactions in the country of 11 million.
In an initial statement before the prosecutor, the elderly homeowner said he did, in fact, shoot at the two intruders, but did so out of fear for his life. He also maintained that he did not intend to kill the pair.
Charges included intent to cause grievous bodily harm, illegal possession and use of a firearm.
The two robbery suspects were also charged, while one of the two remains hospitalized with light injuries from the gunfire.
The suspects were identified as a 28-year-old Albanian national and an 18-year-old local man. They were arrested when they sought treatment at a local hospital.
