Official Turkey has apparently loosened, at least temporarily, security measures aimed to prevent third country nationals from leaving the country's shores to reach Greek isles in the eastern Aegean, as some 300 people landed on Lesvos (Mytilene) overnight on Wednesday.
Eight boats ferrying the Third World nationals landed on the island in a matter of hours at various points, adding to the already 5,300 people being hosted in mostly sub-par facilities on the island.
The migrant/refugee crisis erupted on a massive scale in Greece in 2015, four years after the civil war in Syria began, resulting in roughly one million people landing on Greek territory in a bid to reach preferred destinations in western Europe.
In a related development, search and rescue units were searching a portion of the Evros river bank - which separates Greece and Turkey - after an emergency call was received by authorities. The caller claimed that 15 people who attempted to illegally enter Greece were stranded along the river.
