Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday reiterated from Brussels that two Greek servicemen still being held by Turkish authorities must be immediately freed.
The head the poll-leading New Democracy (ND) party made the statement after exiting a European Peoples Party (EPP) summit, Europe's center-right grouping.
"An insignificant border incident has been transformed into a problematic situation between two countries, threatening the status quo of the past decades, as well as the mutual rapprochement of the two people," he said.
Nevertheless, he said there was no issue of cancelling or postponing an EU-Turkey summit in Varna, Bulgaria if the two servicemen are not released.
A Greek army officer and NCO were arrested and are being held in pre-trial detention in the border city of Edirne on as yet vague charges, while relevant investigation by a local prosecutor is proceeding as a "snail's pace". The pair was arrested after straying into Turkish territory along a poorly demarcated land border between the two countries in the Thrace province.
Similar and number such incidents in the past would be resolved in a matter of hours and at the brigade level.
