Barack Obama’s high-profile visit to the Greece on Tuesday was the catalyst for the latest instances of late-night street violence around the Athens Polytechnic by self-styled anarchist and anti-establishment gangs, an occurrence that woefully coincides with practically every visit by a major power’s leader to the Greek capital.
Up to 150 youths and young adults were tossing firebombs and stones at police and into the Polytechnic’s grounds, while barricades – usually trash bids and other rubbish -- were being erected on side streets.
As with previous such instances, groups of more violence-prone protesters broke off from a main demonstration to congregate near the polytechnic.
