Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leads by 7.5 percentage points over ruling SYRIZA party in the latest opinion poll released this week.

Results of the poll were announced on Thursday by the Athens television station Alpha, and conducted by the firm Marc.

Specifically, center-right ND was picked by 22.3 percent of respondents, to 14.8 percent for leftist SYRIZA.

Besides the two apparent front-runners, ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) followed with 6.3 percent; the Communist Party received 5.8 percent and a socialist PASOK-led grouping garnered 4.7 percent of respondents' preferences.

None of the other parties picked by respondents achieved support of more than 3 percent, which in a general election is necessary in order to enter Parliament and field deputies.

Respondents who said they would cast a blank or invalid vote reached 7.5 percent.

In extrapolating the vote, i.e. eliminating percentages related to blank and invalid votes as well as abstention from the process, ND’s lead rises to 9.6 percentage points: 28.4 percent to 18.8 percent for SYRIZA.

Asked which party they believe will win the next general election, whenever it is held, ND is picked by 64.9 percent of respondents; 15.5 percent for SYRIZA; 15.8 percent of respondents did not answer.

The opinion poll was conducted on a nationwide basis between Sept. 19 and Sept. 21 via telephone interview.
