A Turkish national who was detained for illegally entering Greece has reportedly requested political asylum, claiming he is being persecuted by the current Turkish government.
The report was circulated by the UNHCR, with an official from the agency on the eastern Aegean island of Chios announcing the development, but without giving more information.
According to dispatch by AFP, the Turkish national is a judicial official who arrived on Chios aboard an inflatable dinghy along with six Syrian nationals. The other third country nationals claimed refugee status after setting off from Turkish territory.
