Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Thursday charged that the country’s two military attaches, based at the Turkish embassy in Athens, have fled to Italy in the wake of last month’s failed coup in Turkey.

The Turkish foreign minister and close Erdogan aide was quoted on the Turkish network NTV as making the statement, adding that Ankara will officially ask Italian authorities to extradite the pair. The two Turkish officers have reportedly disappeared from Greece, along with their families.

Cavusoglu also said that a deadline for numerous Turkish diplomats to return to Turkey expired on Thursday.
