Arrears towards the tax bureau are just shy of 90 billion euros, with an increase of 1.2 billion euros tacked on in June2016 alone to a recently designated “new arrears” figure.

The latter figure, which now reaches 6.807 billion, emerged in order to separate recent arrears from debts to the state dating as far back as the 1980s, along with now disbanded state entities, official bankruptcies, and by legal entities that haven’t opearted for decades or by individual taxpayers that have long died.

If added to older “arrears”, then the total raches 89.832 billion euros, of which the greater part has long been considered as uncollectable.

Nevertheless, the “new arrears” figures aims to gauge the level of outstanding debt by current taxpayers and active businesses.
