A sealed tomb dating to the Byzantine era was discovered by chance in the mountainous Zagori district of northwest Greece this week.
The tomb is located next to a basketball court.
Heavy rainfall over the winter led to soil erosion, which led to the appearance of the medieval tomb. A group of youths playing on the court were the first to spot a funereal stone, which they lifted out of curiosity.
Besides the skeletal remains, they spotted various ornate pieces of jewelry, rings and bracelets, as well as other offerings.
Police were called to the scene, with officers on the spot informing the archaeological service, which has assumed the excavation of the tomb.
The exact site was given at the Kipous settlement, northeast of the lake-side city of Ioannina.
