A proposal by the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party for the establishment of a Parliamentary committee of inquiry into the reasons leading to the imposition of capital controls and a bank holiday in late June 2015 was rejected by deputies of the government coalition on Tuesday evening.

The opposition proposal also proposed that the lead-up to the signing of the third memorandum by the Tsipras government also be investigated.

Out of the 300-deputy Parliament, 155 voted against, with 96 voting in favor and 20 abstaining from the vote. One hundred and twenty MPs are necessary to establish such an extraordinary committee. Voting against were MPs from ruling SYRIZA; deputies from the latter’s coalition partner, the small rightist-populist Independent Greeks’ party (AN.EL.) and deputies from the Union of Centrists.
