Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party on Sunday evening launched into a new attack against the leftist Greek government, charging that it is allowing the center of Athens to be transformed into a “den of anarchists”.
The announcement came in light of yet another firebomb-fueled attack on a patrol of riot police over the weekend.
That incident comes after more than 500 validating machines on mass transit buses in the greater Athens area were destroyed last week by self-styled anarchists and so-called “anti-state” activists.
Another ominous trend over recent weeks has been the vandalism of several statues, which were disfigured by graffiti. Even bonze busts have been hacked off, with suspicion falling on either extremist political elements or scrap metal collectors.
