The recently enacted increase in hotel VAT rates in Greece, to 13 percent, is the sixth highest in Europe, with Denmark (25 percent), Slovakia (20), the UK (20), Hungary (18) and the Czech Republic (25 percent) all sport higher rates.

Nevertheless, a separate hotel stay tax also means an indirect hike in occupancy rates, bringing the actual add-on cost to 14.7 to 17.5 percent, and not 13 percent. The category of hotel will determine the height of the separate fee.
