The recently emerged issue of constitutional revision and changes in the Greece’s election law, discussion initiated by government itself over the last few weeks, will reportedly be the subject of a meeting between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to information disseminated by the state-run news agency over the weekend, a meeting between the country’s top two political leaders will come on Thursday at the Maximos Mansion government house.

Nevertheless, according to reports from the main opposition’s camp, Mitsotakis is primarily interested in constitutional revision, a matter that he first broached last January before being elected ND’s new president in a four-way candidate race. The same ND sources said the party’s positions on both changing the constitution and whatever election law revisions are “crystal clear”.

“Mr. Tsipras will be defeated with the same election law under which he has won twice … the (current) government’s goal is to keep ND from achieving an autonomous government, because its (election) victory is a given, whenever it takes place,” was the view from the center-right opposition.

In terms of constitutional revision – a subject that returns to the forefront once every roughly five years on Greece’s shaky political scene – sources close to Mitsotakis said the latter had previously referred to the matter exactly six months ago and cited specific proposals.
