An agreement text between the European Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) excludes traditionally made feta cheese and Kalamata-area olives from a list of protected designation of origin (PDO) products, according to reports.
Although some 200 products are listed as POD in the agreement, the two iconic Greek food products are subject to various exceptions.
One exception allows current South African firms to produce and market feta cheese under the names “South Africa Feta” or “Feta-style” for five years.
