The government on Friday said 19,464 Volkswagen Group vehicles in Greece are believed to carry the so-called "defeat device" software, which is at the center of the ongoing “diesel dupe” controversy plaguing the iconic German manufacturer around the world.

Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis cited the figure in reply to a tabled Parliament question by Independent Greeks’ (AN.EL) party MP Dimitris Kammenos.

The former referred to 2,026 Audi, 2,588 Seat, 6,767 Skoda as well as 6,566 passenger cars and 1,517 professional VW vehicles.

The VW Group has reportedly assured the Greek finance ministry that the specific vehicles are “technologically safe” and that “all technical measures to restore the faulty software will be covered by VW”, while loaner cars will be made available to the owners during the time the vehicles are in repair bays.
