The Lonely Planet website this week ranked the Peloponnese, Greece’s southern-most mainland province, as its top European destination for 2016.

The iconic print and Internet travel group describes the Peloponnese as an inexpensive destination that combines numerous places of interest – and one that combines history with natural beauty.

Author Alexis Averbuck refers to the hospitality of local residents, while praising the archaeological sites of ancient Olympia, Mycenae, the Mystras mountainous fortress and the Gulf of Navarino. Other references include the wines of the Nemea region, remote and rugged Mani in the southeast corner of the province, the alpine-like villages of mountainous Arcadia prefecture, Cape Mainalos and the picturesque harbor-town of Nafplion.

Lonely Planet’s rankings have the Peloponnese above revered holiday destinations as Venice and the Dalmatian coast. Denmark’s Aarhus is second on the list.
