Finance ministry officials took the “off-the-record” route on Friday to criticize the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) demands in ongoing talks between the Greek government and institutional creditors -- negotiations utterly crucial to completion of the first review of the third bailout.

The unnamed officials referred to an “international first” in economic policy, claiming that the IMF wants the income tax-free ceiling (now at roughly 9,500 euros) to be slashed and extended to all taxpayers, as a way of helping the weaker economic strata.
