The EU Commission on Wednesday said it will allocate 700 million euros, with the lion’s share earmarked for Greece, to deal with the ongoing refugee crisis and the looming humanitarian crisis that it involves.

Other countries along the so-called “Balkan corridor”, the land route now used by thousands of Mideast war refugees but also by irregular migrants, will be beneficiaries of the aid as well.

The outlay calls for 300 million euros distributed this year and 400 million in 2007.

Based on the proposal, the money will be distributed via NGOs active in the affected countries, and will involve medical care, housing, food and water services for temporary shelters. Money for “hotspots” and resources for resettling migrants is also included in the foreseen budget.
