The official death toll from February's Australian bushfires has been cut to 173 from a previous count of 210, following extensive forensic examinations and a review of missing persons' reports. The Victoria fires remain the worst on record in Australia. Thousands of homes were lost as searing temperatures and strong winds created firestorms that swept through a string of rural communities north of Melbourne.
