Main opposition New Democracy (ND) president Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday referred to "shocking" data showing the native-born population of Greece both aging and decreasing at an accelerated rate.
The center-right political leader, speaking during a relevant debate in Parliament, also cited a emigration rate of skilled young people leaving crisis-plagued Greece for better career prospects abroad, particularly in other EU countries.
Mitsotakis said Greece's annual birth rate is a mere 1.3 children per couple, one of the lowest in the Union.
Looking to far-off 2080, Mitsotakis said that based on current figures, Greece population from the current 11 million will drop to 7.3 million.
